Write an organized, well-developed essay of approximately 600 words on one of the following topics:

1. Choose a poem published since 2000 in a reputable journal, such as The Chattahoochee Review, The Georgia Review, or Poetry Magazine. Analyze that poem in terms of structure, language, and theme, taking into account such elements as form, rhythm, symbolism, metaphors, and imagery. What do you believe the poet is trying to say? How does he or she go about saying it?
2. Compare a poem written before 1850 with one written after 1950. How are they similar? How are they different? What do the similarities and differences suggest? Again, be sure to deal in your essay with the elements of poetry mentioned above.
3. Analyze the lyrics of a modern song (written since 1960) that you believe qualifies as poetry. First of all, how does it qualify? What makes it poetic, as opposed to just a collection of rhymes? Secondly, what is the poem about? Analyze it in terms of the same elements mentioned in topic one.
